The Cats of Istanbul: Furry Ambassadors of Joy

Istanbul, straddling Europe and Asia, is a mix of ancient history and modern culture. The city, formerly called Byzantium and Constantinople, served as the imperial center for both the Byzantine and Ottoman eras—evident in its stunning architecture, from the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque to the bustling Grand Bazaar.

As a crossroads of cultures where East meets West, Istanbul presents a distinctive blend of tradition and modernity. One of the city’s unique features is its population of street cats, which have become a main part of its identity. Although I’ve come across street cats in Cairo and Morocco, particularly in Chefchaouen and Essaouira, Istanbul’s relationship with its feline residents stands out as truly unique.

The entire city has embraced these animals, treating them more like community members than strays. Everyone seems to have a soft spot for these fur balls, from shopkeepers to bakery owners. I saw bowls of water and food that where placed along sidewalks and alleyways throughout the city.

Some areas even have street signs that read, “Cat Crossing.” You’ll find the cats lounging on shop awnings or settling beside you in a restaurant. If a cat falls ill, someone in the community will take them to the vet for care. Among the many cats I saw, only one looked like it might be ill. Most others appeared healthy and well-cared for. And, most of the cats are vaccinated.

I loved seeing cats sprawled across the bookshelves of a little outdoor bookstand, their eyes half-closed in serene contentment, and another sunning himself on the sidewalk, almost as if he were smiling. But what really made me smile was a cat stretched out on the roof of a car,  napping away under the warm sun.

The cats of Istanbul represent the city’s unique blend of old and new, East and West. For centuries, cats have been revered in Turkish culture, often seen as symbols of good fortune and protection. This cultural appreciation extends to Istanbul, where the city’s historical role as a trade center brought not only goods and people but also animals, including cats. Over time, these felines became part of the city’s identity, and their presence is now intertwined with Istanbul’s daily life.

I do not believe there is an official program or mandate—just a natural way of life. The cats of Istanbul symbolize the city’s warmth and empathy. In a chaotic world, this mutual understanding of caring for these animals reflects the heart of Istanbul. The cats are not just a part of the scenery but a  part of the city’s vibrant and enduring tapestry.

Many cafes and shops in Istanbul display cat-themed decor. Documentaries and films in recent years have highlighted the city’s affection for its feline residents, making them an iconic part of Istanbul’s culture.
